  • What Is NGCI Beer?

Scroll through gluten-free beer labels and you’ll eventually spot the letters “NGCI”. It’s not a brand or a brewery - it’s a category, and for people with coeliac disease, it’s arguably the most reassuring one on the shelf.

Let’s break down what NGCI actually means, and why it matters so much if you’re avoiding gluten.

What Does NGCI Mean?

NGCI stands for Non Gluten Containing Ingredients. It’s the term used for beers brewed entirely from grains that never contained gluten in the first place - things like sorghum, rice, millet, buckwheat, and quinoa, instead of traditional barley or wheat.

You’ll also hear these called naturally gluten-free beers. Both terms describe the same thing: a beer where gluten was never part of the recipe, rather than a beer that had gluten removed after the fact.

NGCI vs Gluten-Removed: What’s the Difference?

As covered in our guide to what gluten-free beer actually means, there are two main ways brewers make gluten-free beer, and NGCI is one of them.

Gluten-removed beers start with regular barley or wheat, then use an enzyme treatment - typically Brewers Clarex® - during fermentation to break down and strip out the gluten proteins until the beer tests below the legal 20ppm threshold.

NGCI beers skip that process entirely. Because the grains used never had gluten to begin with, there’s nothing to remove, no enzyme step, and no gluten present at any stage of brewing. It’s gluten-free by ingredients, not by treatment.

Why NGCI Matters So Much for Coeliacs

This distinction matters more than it might first appear. Some people with coeliac disease are cautious about gluten-removed beers, partly because the standard R5-ELISA testing method used to measure gluten levels can struggle to detect the smaller, hydrolysed gluten fragments left behind after enzyme treatment, sometimes producing false negatives. Research has found that some of these surviving fragments can still contain epitopes capable of triggering a reaction, even when the beer tests under 20ppm.

NGCI beers sidestep that concern completely. There’s no barley, no wheat, and no enzyme breakdown to question - just grains that were never a source of gluten. For anyone who wants the highest level of confidence in their pint, or who has previously reacted to a gluten-removed beer, NGCI is generally considered the safer starting point.

It’s also why allergen labelling looks different between the two. Gluten-removed beers are legally required to list barley as an allergen even once the gluten has been removed, since UK allergen law requires disclosure of the grain used. NGCI beers have no such requirement - if there’s no “contains barley” statement on the label, you’re very likely drinking a naturally gluten-free beer.

What Does NGCI Beer Taste Like?

Because they’re brewed from entirely different grains to traditional beer, NGCI beers can taste noticeably different. Sorghum, rice, millet, and buckwheat each bring their own character, and the results are often lighter, crisper, or slightly tarter than a classic barley-based beer.

That’s not a downside - it’s a different style worth exploring on its own terms. Breweries have spent years refining these recipes, and there’s now a genuinely wide range of NGCI beers available, from pale ales to lagers to stouts, each showcasing what these grains can do.

Finding NGCI Beers

NGCI beers aren’t always easy to spot at a glance - labelling varies between brands, and not every retailer or pub makes the distinction clear. The Gluten Free Pints app is built to solve exactly this problem: you can search specifically for NGCI beers, see community ratings and reviews, and find pubs, breweries, and shops near you that stock them.

If you’ve had mixed experiences with gluten-removed beers in the past, or you simply prefer the certainty of a beer that was never brewed with gluten-containing grains, filtering for NGCI in the app is the quickest way to drink with confidence.

Final Thoughts

NGCI beer isn’t a niche label to be wary of - it’s the gold standard for anyone who wants zero ambiguity about what’s in their glass. Naturally gluten-free from grain to glass, no enzymes, no removal process, and no barley in sight.

Whether you stick to NGCI beers exclusively or mix them with gluten-removed options, knowing the difference means you’re always making an informed choice.
